Precipitation can occur in many forms, ranging from drizzle and rain to hail and snow. In order for precipitation to form, a certain process must take place.

The formation of precipitation begins with the condensation of water vapor in the atmosphere. As air rises, it cools and the water vapor it contains condenses into tiny droplets of liquid water.

These droplets come together and become large enough to form clouds. Clouds are composed of billions of tiny water droplets and ice crystals that are held up in the atmosphere.

As the clouds continue to rise, they will reach a point where the temperature and pressure are such that the water droplets begin to freeze into ice crystals.

The ice crystals will cluster together and form snowflakes or hail. As the ice crystals fall from the clouds, they will melt into liquid droplets and become rain.
