Sedimentary rock is classified into two main categories: clastic and chemical. Clastic or detrital sedimentary rocks are made from pieces of bedrock, sediment, derived primarily by mechanical weathering. Clastic rocks may also include chemically weathered sediment.

Sedimentary rocks are a type of rock that is formed by the accumulation and cementation of sediment that is exposed to weathering. Sedimentary rocks are classified according to the type of sediment, the processes that formed the sediment, and the environment of deposition. Generally, sedimentary rocks can be classified into four major categories: clastic, chemical, organic, and biochemical.

Clastic sedimentary rocks are those that are composed of fragments of pre-existing rocks and minerals. These fragments, known as clasts, are the result of mechanical weathering of rocks. Clastic sedimentary rocks are further classified according to the size of the clasts. Conglomerates and breccias are composed of coarse-grained clasts such as pebbles, cobbles, and boulders. Sandstones are composed of medium-grained clasts such as sand grains, while siltstones and mudstones are composed of fine-grained clasts such as silt and clay.
