Metamorphic rocks are among the oldest rocks found on the Earth’s surface. They have been formed through intense heat and pressure, which have caused the original rocks to change in their mineral content and structure. Geologists classify metamorphic rocks based on the type of minerals found in them and the amount of heat and pressure that has been applied to them.

The first type of metamorphic rocks are foliated metamorphic rocks. These rocks have been subjected to high temperatures and pressures, which have caused them to become layered and split. The grains are arranged in planes, and they may appear shiny, dull, or wavy. Examples of foliated metamorphic rocks are slate, schist, and gneiss.

The second type of metamorphic rocks are non-foliated metamorphic rocks. These rocks have not been subjected to the same intense heat and pressure that foliated rocks have. Non-foliated rocks are not layered, and they may have a variety of minerals in them. Examples of non-foliated rocks are marble and quartzite.
