How Long Did the Great Wall of China Take to Build?
The Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic structures in the world, symbolizing the strength and power of the Chinese Empire. But how long did it take to build the Great Wall of China?
The Great Wall of China was actually constructed over a period of more than 2000 years. The earliest sections of the wall were built during the 7th century BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. The sections that were built during this time were mostly made of earth and wood, and were used to defend against nomadic raids.
Over the next few centuries, various Chinese dynasties expanded and strengthened the wall. It was extended to its current length of more than 5,500km during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). During this time, the wall was built by conscripting peasants and soldiers, and was constructed using stone, brick and tamped earth.
The construction of the wall took around two centuries to complete, and it is estimated that more than one million people were involved in its construction. The wall served as an effective barrier to protect China from invasion for centuries and is still standing today.
