Eurotunnel is one of the most important transportation links connecting Britain and France, and is the longest fixed link between two countries in the world. The tunnel is more than 31 miles (50 kilometres) long and runs from Coquelles in France to Folkestone in England.
The tunnel is made up of three sections: two single track railway tunnels for the transport of passengers and freight and a service tunnel in between them. The two single track tunnels measure 23.5 miles (37.9 km) in length, while the service tunnel measures 4.8 miles (7.7 km). The total length of the tunnel is 31.4 miles (50.5 km).
The tunnel is composed of three layers: an outer concrete shell, a reinforced inner wall and a central service tunnel. The walls of the tunnel are lined with concrete and are as thick as 1.9 metres in some sections.
The tunnel is supported by seven pillars, each one measuring 33 feet (10 metres) high. Each pillar is made up of a steel frame filled with reinforced concrete. The pillars are designed to withstand the pressure of the tunnel and the trains running inside.
