How Long Is the Eurotunnel?

It is 50.5km long and comprises an undersea section of 38km, still the longest in the world. They are used by eurotunnel passenger and truck shuttles, high-speed passenger eurostar trains and rail freight trains.

How Long Is the Eurotunnel?

The Eurotunnel is one of the world’s most iconic engineering feats. The tunnel, which runs under the English Channel, enables high-speed rail journeys between England and France. But how long is the Eurotunnel?

The Eurotunnel is comprised of two separate tunnels that each measure 31.4 miles (50.5 kilometers) in length. As the crow flies, the distance between the two ends of the tunnel is 21 miles (33.9 kilometers). However, due to the curved nature of the tunnel, the total length of the two tunnels combined is over twice that distance.

The tunnel was originally built in the late 1980s and opened in 1994. Its construction was an incredible engineering feat, taking six years and costing billions of dollars. It was built using a combination of traditional tunnel boring machines and an innovative technique known as “immersed tube” construction. This method involved pre-casting long sections of tunnel and then floating them into position beneath the seabed.

The two tunnels are linked to a service tunnel in the middle, which is used for maintenance and emergency evacuation. The service tunnel is 1.83 miles (2.95 kilometers) long and is connected to emergency escape shafts every 1
