How Long to Make Mount Rushmore?

Mount Rushmore is one of the most iconic landmarks in the United States. It is a symbol of the nation’s history, culture, and patriotism, and attracts millions of visitors each year. The sculptured heads of four of the most influential presidents in U.S. history are carved into the granite of the Black Hills of South Dakota. But how long did it take to create this masterpiece?

The idea of creating Mount Rushmore was first proposed by South Dakota historian Doane Robinson in 1923. Robinson wanted to attract tourists to the state by creating a monument that would honor the country’s most famous presidents. He enlisted the help of sculptor Gutzon Borglum to bring the project to life.

Construction of the monument began in October 1927, and the first of the four presidential heads was completed in October 1934. The entire project took 14 years to finish. The main sculpting of the presidents’ faces was done by Borglum and his crew of 400 workers between 1927 and 1941. The work was done using dynamite and jackhammers to blast away the granite, followed by chisels and other tools to refine and shape the faces into the likenesses of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln
