How Many Miles Is the Mackinac Bridge?
The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan and connects the state’s two peninsulas, the Upper and Lower Peninsula. The bridge is five miles long, making it the third-longest suspension bridge in the world and the longest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.
The bridge has four main towers that reach up to 552 feet above the water, making it the fifth-tallest bridge in the United States. The Mackinac Bridge is also the longest bridge in the United States to span fresh water and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state of Michigan.
The bridge was built between 1954 and 1957 and cost over $99 million to complete. The total length of the bridge is 8,614 feet and the main span is 3,800 feet long. The two lanes of the bridge are 20 feet wide each, and the total width of the bridge is 157 feet.
The total weight of the bridge is over 1,000,000 tons, which includes the steel superstructure, the concrete piers, and the cables. The Mackinac Bridge also includes two 1.5-mile approaches that connect to the bridge.
