The greek historian herodotus was told that it took 100,000 men 20 years to build the great pyramid at giza. Scholars today, however, think it may have been built by only 20,000 men over 20 years.
How Many Years Did It Take to Build the Great Pyramid?
The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the most iconic and impressive structures in the world. It is also one of the oldest, having been built over 4,500 years ago. But just how long did it take to build this ancient wonder?
The answer is that it took an estimated 20 years to build the Great Pyramid. The timeline is based on archaeological evidence, including written records and the accounts of ancient Greek writers such as Herodotus.
The Great Pyramid was built as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu, the second ruler of the 4th Dynasty. He began construction around 2550 BC and it was completed sometime between 2530 and 2510 BC.
It is believed that it took around 200,000 workers to build the Great Pyramid and that they worked in three shifts of around 10,000 people each. Each shift would have worked for three months, with a month off in between shifts for rest and preparation.
It is estimated that the Great Pyramid was built using around 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons. The stones were quarried from a site on the Giza plateau and transported to the construction site using a network of sledges, ramps and levers.
