How to Get a Contractors License in Alabama?

When you want to become a contractor in Alabama, you must first obtain a contractors license from the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors.

The Board issues two types of licenses: the General Contractor License and the Residential Contractor License. The General Contractor License is required for all commercial, industrial and institutional projects while the Residential Contractor License is only required for residential projects that are three stories or less in height.

To qualify for a General Contractor License, you must have at least four years of experience in the construction business or a related field, such as architecture or engineering.

You must also pass a written examination administered by the Board. The examination covers general knowledge of construction, safety, business and law.

To qualify for a Residential Contractor License, you must have at least two years of experience in the construction business or a related field.
