The process begins with screening. In this step, large objects like sticks, leaves, and even fish are removed from the water before it enters the plant. This helps protect the pumps and other equipment from being damaged. After screening, the water goes through a grit chamber. This chamber helps remove sand and gravel from the wastewater.

Next, the water goes through a primary settling tank. Here, heavy solids sink to the bottom of the tank and are removed. If anything is left behind, it is taken to the secondary settling tank. In the secondary settling tank, lighter solids settle out of the water and are also removed.

The next step in the process is aeration. In this step, oxygen is added to the water in order to help break down organic material. This is done in an aeration basin. After aeration, the water goes through a secondary settling tank where more solids settle out of the wastewater.
