Curved staircases should be at least four feet wide. For extra safety, stairs should be at least five feet wide.

In commercial spaces, stairs must be designed to meet building codes and standards. Stairways in commercial buildings should be at least four feet wide to accommodate two people walking side by side. They should also have a landing at least every twelve steps to provide a safe resting spot. For safety, they should also have handrails on both sides of the stairs.
