A molecule is two or more atoms that are joined together. There are three major states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. The state of a substance depends on how much energy is in the substance.

A solid has the least amount of energy, and a gas has the most. The physical properties of matter are used to describe matter. These properties include:

Mass: the amount of matter in an object

Volume: the amount of space an object takes up

Density: the mass of an object divided by its volume

Melting point: the temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid
