What Is 5s Lean?

5s is a five step methodology for creating a more organized and productive workspace: sort, straighten, shine, standardize, and sustain. 5s serves as a foundation for deploying more advanced lean production tools and processes.

What Is 5s Lean?

5s is a system for organizing and streamlining work areas. It is based on the principle ofa place for everything, and everything in its place.” 5s is designed to help workers find things more quickly and eliminate waste.

The system is divided into five steps: sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain. The first step, sort, is about getting rid of anything that is not needed in the work area.

This might mean throwing away old tools or materials, or putting them in a different location. The second step, set in order, is about organizing the work area so that everything has a specific place.

This makes it easier to find things and to know where to put them back when they are not being used. The third step, shine, is about keeping the work area clean.

This means sweeping or vacuuming the floor, wiping down surfaces, and organizing tools and materials. The fourth step, standardize, is about creating rules and procedures for how the work area should be kept.

This might include making a cleaning schedule, or creating a system for labeling tools and materials. The fifth step, sustain, is about maintaining the work area over time
