Program evaluation review technique (pert) is a project management planning tool used to calculate the amount of time it will take to realistically finish a project. Pert charts are used to plan tasks within a project — making it easier to schedule and coordinate team members.

PERT is an acronym for Project Evaluation and Review Technique. It is a statistical tool used in project management, which was developed in the 1950s by the U.S.

Navy. PERT charts are used to map out the tasks involved in a project, along with the dependencies between those tasks. They also show the estimated duration of each task, as well as the earliest and latest possible start and finish dates.

PERT can be used to create a schedule for a project, as well as to track progress and identify potential bottlenecks. The technique is based on the idea that there is uncertainty inherent in every project, and that this uncertainty can be quantified.

This uncertainty is represented by the three time estimates associated with each task:

optimistic time estimate (O): the shortest time in which the task could possibly be completed pessimistic time estimate (P):
