What Is Positive and Negative Reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement is a process that strengthens the likelihood of a particular response by adding a stimulus after the behavior is performed. Negative reinforcement also strengthens the likelihood of a particular response, but by removing an undesirable consequence.

What Is Positive and Negative Reinforcement?

In operant conditioning, positive and negative reinforcement are terms used to describe two different ways of increasing the likelihood that a behavior will be repeated.

positive reinforcement occurs when a behavior is followed by a reward, while negative reinforcement occurs when a behavior is followed by the removal of an unpleasant condition.

The two different types of reinforcement can be used to increase or decrease the likelihood of a variety of different behaviors, depending on the desired outcome.

For example, if a parent wants their child to brush their teeth every night, they might use positive reinforcement by rewarding the child with a sticker after they brush their teeth.

On the other hand, if a parent wants their child to stop biting their nails, they might use negative reinforcement by withholding dessert from the child after they bite their nails.

It‘s important to note that both positive and negative reinforcement involve the use of rewards or punishments to influence behavior.

The key difference is that positive reinforcement rewards a behavior to increase the likelihood of that behavior being repeated, while negative reinforcement removes an unpleasant condition after a desired behavior is displayed in order to increase the likelihood of that behavior being repeated.

There are a few things to keep in mind when using positive or negative reinforcement to influence behavior. First, it‘s important to make sure that
