A truss consists of twoforce members only. Members of a truss are connected together by rigid joints to form a rigid body.

The loads applied to the truss are transmitted to the joints and members so that the joints and members are in compression, tension, or a combination of the two.

A truss is usually designed so that the members and joints carry only axial forces; that is, the members are either in tension or compression.

If the truss is to be used in a structure, such as a building, bridge, or tower, in which bending moments are also to be carried, the truss must be designed so that the members and joints can also carry shear forces and bending moments.

The analysis of a truss requires the determination of the forces in the members and the reactions at the joints.
