Mt. Rushmore National Monument is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The monument features the 60foothigh faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.

The monument was carved out of the granite face of the mountain by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln, between 1927 and 1941.

Mt. Rushmore was Borglum‘s idea. He originally wanted to feature the faces of America‘s greatest presidents on the side of a mountain in the western United States.

After considering several locations, Borglum chose the Black Hills of South Dakota, where the Lakota Sioux had long considered the mountain to be sacred.

Borglum began carving the monument in 1927. He chose the four presidents he believed to be the most important in American history:

George Washington, the country‘s first president and theFather of our Nation;” Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president;
