Mt. Rushmore National Monument is a sculpture carved into the side of a mountain in South Dakota, United States. The monument features the faces of four former Presidents of the United States:
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Mt. Rushmore was carved over a period of 14 years, from 1927 to 1941.
It was commissioned by President Calvin Coolidge and designed by Gutzon Borglum. Borglum was a Danish–American sculptor who also designed the Stone Mountain carving in Georgia.
The carving of Mt. Rushmore was originally intended to feature the faces of all six US Presidents who had been in office at the time of their deaths:
Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. However, due to the onset of the Great Depression and lack of funding, only the first four were completed.
