What Type of Septic Systems Are There?

There are two septic system types, conventional and aerobic. Both systems produce the same end goal (sewage breakdown and effluent treatment) but the means by which each system achieves that goal is different.

What Type of Septic Systems Are There?

There are four primary types of septic systems: gravity, pressure, mound, and aerated. Each type has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages that should be considered before installation.

Gravity systems are the most common and least expensive type of septic system. They rely on gravity to move wastewater from the house to the septic tank and then to the leach field.

Gravity systems are typically used in areas with gentle slopes and good soil drainage. Pressure systems use a pump to move wastewater from the house to the septic tank.

Pressure systems are often used in areas with steep slopes or poor soil drainage. Mound systems are similar to gravity systems, but they use a series of pumps and pipes to raise the leach field above the ground.

Mound systems are typically used in areas with high water tables or poor soil drainage. Aerated systems use a pump to aerate the wastewater and promote the growth of bacteria that break down sewage.

Aerated systems are often used in areas with high water tables or poor soil drainage.
