Why Is Mount Rushmore a Significant Landmark?

Mount Rushmore is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It consists of four enormous, 60-foot-high granite faces of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The faces are chiseled into a granite cliff and represent the first 150 years of the history of the United States.
Mount Rushmore is significant for many reasons, not the least of which is its physical beauty. Danish sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his team of hundreds of workers carved the faces of the four presidents. The sheer size of the sculptures is awe-inspiring, and the careful detailing of each of the four great presidents can only be fully appreciated when seen in person. Additionally, Mount Rushmore is a symbol of American democracy. The four presidents, whose faces have come to represent American values such as freedom, leadership, liberty, and democracy, are icons of the nation and its importance.
