How Long Is the Channel Tunnel?

The Channel Tunnel, also known as theChunnel‘, is an engineering marvel connecting the UK and France beneath the English Channel.

It is one of the longest underwater tunnels in the world, stretching for an impressive 31.4 miles (50.5 km) from Folkestone in the UK to Coquelles in France.

The Channel Tunnel was the result of more than ten years of planning and construction, beginning in the mid1980s and ending with the official opening in 1994.

During the construction process, over 6,000 people worked together to create the tunnel, and it took an incredible 15,000 precast concrete segments to line the tunnel walls.

The Channel Tunnel is composed of three tunnels, two for rail traffic and a smaller service tunnel between them. The two main rail tunnels stretch for a total of 22.6 miles (36.4 km) and have a diameter of just over 7 feet (2.2 m).

The service tunnel, meanwhile, is 8.2 miles (13.1 km) long and has a diameter of 11 feet (3.4 m). The tunnel is also home to a number of sophisticated systems, including an advanced ventilation system, a firesuppression system, and a power
